Visual Freedom Customized for Your Lifestyle

A patient who elects to have traditional cataract surgery will have their cloudy lens replaced with an approved monofocal intraocular lens (IOL).  This patient will see great results and their visual clarity will be immediately restored.  The downside is that if this person wore glasses before the procedure, he or she will still need to wear glasses to correct their vision, especially for reading.  For many, this lens is a great option, and they’re just grateful to have their vision restored to a point where they can enjoy life again.

Thanks to some amazing advancements in lens technology, there now exist “premium lenses" that can restore a wide range of vision, and are customized for your lifestyle.  Patients who select a lifestyle lens for their procedure are afforded greater visual advantages over the traditional monofocal lens. They can enjoy a wide range of both distance and reading vision, reducing or even eliminating any prescription prior to surgery, even astigmatism! They may no longer need the aid of glasses to see things close up, such as newspapers or pill bottles, and many patients may be completely independent of glasses altogether.

Depending on your overall health, the health of your eyes, and your visual lifestyle requirement, the doctors at Victoria Eye Center will customize a treatment plan that will afford you the best overall result and freedom from glasses.  To do this, they will select from two types of premium lifestyle lens technologies:

Multifocal IOLs

The multifocal IOL of choice at Victoria Eye center is the AcrySof ReSTOR. This premium lens is called a ‘multifocal’ lens because it is designed with several viewing ‘zones,’ so it function much like a bifocal in a pair of glasses.  These zones are responsible for viewing objects at far, and near distances, restoring the widest range of vision possible.  In fact, over 80% of patients report they never wear glasses for any activities whatsoever!   Learn more about the ReSTOR lens.

Toric IOLs

A Toric IOL is a premium lens designed specifically for the correction of astigmatism. Astigmatism is the result of a cornea that is shaped more like a cone than a ball.  Prior to the development of Toric lenses, cataract patients still had to wear glasses to correct any astigmatism, or undergo additional surgery to relax the cornea. AcrySof’s Toric IOL is engineered to counteract this imbalance and eliminate any astigmatism that existed prior to your procedure, while at the same time giving you clear distance vision.  Learn more.

Refractive Lens Exchange

In many cases, people struggling with their vision are more mature in age but haven’t developed cataracts. Perhaps the natural lens in their eye is still clear but no longer allows focus on near objects. In this case, your surgeon may suggest a similar procedure, called refractive lens exchange.

Similar to cataract surgery, the patient's natural lens is replaced with one of the aforementioned lifestyle lenses. This affords them great distance and close up vision and potential overall independence from glasses. Plus, they will never need cataract surgery because their natural lens has already been replaced.
