George T. Boozalis, M.D.

George Boozalis, MDA native Texan, Dr. Boozalis grew up along the Texas Gulf coast in Lake Jackson, attending Texas A&M, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Biochemistry in only three years. Dr. Boozalis received numerous awards, honors, fellowships, and scholarships during his collegiate career including the Gathright Academic Excellence Award, the Lechner Fellowship, the Freeman Scholarship, and selection to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Dr. Boozalis was one of the first graduates of A&M to be accepted at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

After receiving his medical degree in 1987, Dr. Boozalis returned to Texas for his internship and residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. He was then accepted to the world renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Medical School. Dr. Boozalis performed fellowship specialty training at this top ranked ophthalmology program studying corneal and cataract surgeries (including the latest in refractive surgery). While in Florida he also taught eye surgery to the residents in training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr. Boozalis has performed numerous research projects and published and presented many papers during his ophthalmic career. Board Certified in Ophthalmology, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of numerous ophthalmic and medical societies. Dr. Boozalis brings the latest advances in ophthalmic surgery and clinical skill to our area. His dedication to his field is an asset to us all.

Dr. Boozalis returned to Texas in 1995 to develop the Victoria Eye Center. Modeled after the world renowned eye centers he trained at, Dr. Boozalis hopes to continue the growth of Victoria Eye Center in order to provide the best quality ophthalmic care for our community.

Dr. Boozalis brings the same skill and dedication to our under privileged both here and abroad. He participates locally in charitable ophthalmic care programs and and served for many years in Central America as part of the Benevolent Mission International's Christian ophthalmic mission to Belize. This dedication to providing charitable Christian ophthalmic care led to his development of the Bartimaeus Foundation. The foundation financially supports these Christian ophthalmic missions. Most recently he has completed his Masters degree in Theology and has been active in founding an Orthodox Christian Mission Church in Victoria (www.allsaintsvictoria.org) .

His wife, Debbie, also a native Texan and an Aggie, graduated from the Baylor School of Law and practiced law until beginning their family. They are blessed with five wonderful children, Amanda, Jaclyn, Theodore, Hannah, and Stephanie.

 

John Zwaan, M.D., PH.D.

John Zwaan, M.D., PH.D.Dr. Zwaan is an internationally-trained ophthalmologist specializing in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismis, an eye misalignment caused by extraocular muscle imbalance in children. He is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio and serves as the director of pediatric ophthalmology at Victoria Eye Center.

Dr. Zwann’s medical training and experience also spans the globe from the University of Amsterdam - where he completed medical school and his residency in ophthalmology – to his post-doctoral research in the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Carnegie Institute of Washington, Department of Embryology.

He has numerous academic and hospital appointments in his medical career and has an extensive military career in both the Royal Dutch Army and the U.S. Army  Reserve  Medical Corps. He has numerous memberships in professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and the American Society of Human  Genetics.

Children, parents and patients of all ages enjoy the enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge Dr. Zwaan brings to his duties at Victoria Eye Center.

 

A. Robert Alcasabas, O.D.

Robert Alcasabas, O.D.A. Robert Alcasabas, O.D. was raised on Long Island, New York. In 1983 he graduated with a B.A. in Biology from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He then received his doctorate in Optometry in 1988 from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Alcasabas then undertook a one year Fellowship in Primary Care/Contact Lenses at the University of Houston - College of Optometry in Houston, Texas. After a year and a half in private practice, Dr. Alcasabas then served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas.

He was appointed Chief of Contact Lens Services at Randolph AFB and also was an instructor for ophthalmology and optometry residents at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. In 1995, Dr. Alcasabas returned to civilian life and was hired as a staff optometrist for the ophthalmology center of the MacGregor Medical Association located in Houston, Texas. In 1996 Dr. Alcasabas joined CIGNA Healthcare in Houston where he stayed for four years. He then worked as a clinical professor at the University of Houston - College of Optometry. Dr. Alcasabas then started to work at his private practice at Ultimate Eyecare while still teaching at the University of Houston.

Dr. Alcasabas is an experienced therapeutic optometrist who is certified to treat minor illnesses of the eyes and glaucoma. He has written and lectured on the behalf of a local newspaper, the U.S. Air Force, University of Houston - College of Optometry, Bausch and Lomb, and the American Optometric Student Association.

Dr. Alcasabas likes to spend time with his wife Kathy and his two children, Amy and Robbie. He is also a black belt in the martial art of Aikido and is ranked in the self defense system of Krav Maga. He also enjoys writing, bicycling and volleyball.

 

Caia Homerstad, O.D.

Caia Homerstad, O.D.A native Texan, Dr. Homerstad achieved her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Psychology in August of 1991 at the University of Houston. Before entering Optometry school, she worked in a virology lab researching Sr. Louis Encephalitis. She completed her Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry in May 1996. In July 2000, she became certified to treat glaucoma. During Optometry school, she was awarded the Edith Greeman Scholarship and was recognized as the Most Outstanding First Year and Second Year Student. She received several Letters of Clinical Excellence and was inducted in to the Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society. Dr. Homerstad was also active in the American Optometry Association as the University of Houston's school president and student representative of the Foundation of Education and Research for Vision.

In 1995 - 1996, she completed her externship at Houston Eye Associates and at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston with a Neuro-Ophthalmologist. She gained extensive experience in pupil anomalies, migraines, visual field defects, and unexplained vision loss. Dr. Homerstad also completed an externship in primary eye care, pediatrics, contact lens and emergency ocular care.

Dr. Homerstad's professional experience includes a position at a Corpus Christi ophthalmology practice where she helped establish a new satellite clinic in Aransas Pass and provided primary eye care, including contact lens, pediatric, and post-operative care. Dr. Homerstad also practiced full-scope optometry at a private optometrist's office. Her clinic time encompassed vision therapy, complex contact lens fits, nursing home examinations, ocular infections, minor trauma and glaucoma evaluations.

When Dr. Homerstad came to Victoria Eye Center in 1997, she started a Low Vision Clinic to offer patients with limited vision or visual field loss an alternative to standard glasses. The low vision devices more commonly used are microscopes, telescopes and magnifiers. The devices Dr. Homerstad prescribes help the patients maximize their remaining vision and maintain their independence.

Dr. Homerstad is married to Rick Williams. Rick is the managing Pharmacist at Roger's Pharmacy, Regional Branch. They have two joyful children, Peyton and Arin.

 

Autumn Lind, O.D.

Autumn Lind, O.D.Dr. Lind grew up in Hamilton, in the central Texas area. She graduated in 1999 from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. During her college years, Dr. Lind pursued her interest in medicine by working as an emergency room technician and served as the coordinator of the volunteer program at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.  She was an active member of the Texas A&M Executive Council of Health Organizations, the Texas A&M Optometry Association, Pre-Medical Society and also served as Facilitator for the Brazos Valley Diabetes Support Group.

Dr. Lind graduated with her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston, College of Optometry in May of 2004 with a Glaucoma and Therapeutic License. While in Optometry school, Dr. Lind received numerous awards including Most Dedicated Student Award, Class of 2004 Outstanding Student Award, the Dr. Love Memorial Scholarship, and the prestigious Golden Key International Optometric Honor Society, Excellence in Leadership Award. She was elected to the highest level of student body leadership, serving as Trustee for the college at the national level American Optometric Student Association.  The Trustees from each college nominated her for the prestigious leadership position of national president. In addition, she was inducted in 2005 as a lifetime member of MENSA International High IQ Society. One of her most memorable experiences was serving as an Intern Doctor of Optometry at the Sante Fe Indian Hospital in Santa Fe, NM. She also completed internships in Plano and Houston, Texas, in medical eye care, with an emphasis in glaucoma and diabetes, specialty Pediatrics, and Developmental and Low Vision clinics.

Dr. Lind’s professional experience includes working in Lubbock, TX for Ginter Eye Care Center where she practiced full-scope optometry specializing in glaucoma evaluations. She joined Victoria Eye Center in September of 2006 and specializes in medical eye care, with an emphasis in patient education, at the Victoria, Cuero, Hallettesville and Port Lavaca locations.

Dr. Lind was elected to the Board of Trustees for the Texas Optometric Association (TOA).  She is the youngest female to be elected to the board in the history of the TOA.  She currently works to ensure that excellent eye care is provided to every Texan.  She is the president of the local optometric society, the South Central Texas Optometric Association. She presents continuing education classes for opticians and technicians at the state level. An active member of several Optometric associations, including the American Optometric Association and the Texas Optometric Association, Dr. Lind continues to serve both her profession and her community though committee work, presentations and vision screening programs.

Dr. Lind is the daughter of Henry and Pam Lind of Cuero, Texas. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, designing and playing Scrabble.

 

Joseph Parker, O.D.

Joseph Parker, O.D.Dr. Parker is a clinical optometrist at Victoria Eye Center whose experience and expertise includes extensive medical mission work in such far-reaching areas as Kenya, Haiti and Nigeria.

After completing his Doctorate of Optometry at the University of Houston College of Optometry, Dr. Parker performed completed his Optometric Residency in Ocular Disease and Cataract & Refractive Surgery Co-Management at the Eye Center of Texas.

He is a former Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas and was an Academic All American in the Southwest Conference while at Austin College. He has extensive training in ocular disease, cataract and refractive surgery co-management as well as primary eye care. He is a licensed Therapeutic and Optometric Specialist and is certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Drug Enforcement Agency in Controlled Substances.

His strong faith led him to become President of the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes while in college. His hobbies include running, snow boarding and playing guitar.
