Typical LASIK surgery can correct nearsightedness, but many patients find they still needed to purchase reading glasses as they age. This has changed thanks to modern technology. In Victoria Dr. Boozalis uses the latest customized LASIK techniques to correct your distance vision problems while improving your focus on close objects as well.

As we age we gradually lose the ability to accommodate  (focus) the lens of our eye. When the ability to accommodate is lost, it means that the eyes cannot adjust or focus images at different distances. Therefore, different glasses, at different focal lengths, are required for distance and near vision. People may find that if they can see well at distance, they now require glasses to read and vice versa. This problem is called Presbyopia and this may be corrected with monovision. Monovision corrects one eye for distance and one eye for near vision.

How Monovision LASIK Works

Monovision LASIK can correct nearsighted or myopic problems in the dominant eye, and then only a portion of the nearsightedness in the other eye. This enables the patient to see distant things clearly by using the fully corrected eye, and close objects with the partially corrected eye. While this may seem unusual, the brain is able to adapt to the different ways each eye sees, producing a better outcome for the patient.

If you plan to try the new procedure, keep in mind you will need to wear monovision lenses first for a period of time to see if your body will tolerate having one fully corrected and one partly corrected eye. If you tolerate this well, you may be a good candidate for monovision LASIK surgery.
